Wahl CLIPPER CLASS

Open to all sizes and breeds, including mixed breeds and purebred dogs in clippered pet trims. This fun competition class simulates what most of us do in the salon everyday.  You will showcase your clipper and finishing  skills to produce a pet trim that would be suitable for a client dog.

 
Times
17″ and under: 45 minutes total for clipper and scissor work,

17.1″ and over: 60 minutes total for clipper and scissor work.

Minimum 50% of allotted time must be used towards clipper work.

!! This is an unofficial competition class and does NOT count as points towards Groom Team Canada
This is offered at one level and not available to Level A (Open) Competitors

CLASS RULES

Minimal color, if any, is permitted. Judges are looking for stunning quality and artistry which would be appropriate for a client’s dog and can be reproduced in one day.

 

 

Competitor’s attire should not detract from or overpower the groom; it can be complementary or an extension of the design.

 

Entries used for this class must be groomed prior to competition. Any Purebred or Mixed Breed dog or cat may be used.

 

If using an entry from a previous class, Competitor must make a distinguishable difference in the design

 

Opawz
MINI ME
Kids Under 15 years old

JUDGES: Lorna Phillips & Shaunna Bernardin 

All competitors for this class must be under the age of 15 years old. Model dog heads will be used for this class and should be completely brushed out before the competition starts.  

Entry fees include model dogs head and wig. All kids will receive a participation ribbon and are able to keep the model dog. 

 

Timeframe: 30 minutes to scissor, hands, clipper, colour, powder and spray their hearts away! Bows, elastics etc. are allowed. This is a fun competition, so anything goes!

POODLE
Groom Team Sanctioned
JUDGES: Michell Evans & Irina Pinkusevich

Includes all sizes and natural colours of Poodles in any pet or conformation type trim provided they follow the breed profile of the poodle.  

All trimming and styling must be completed within the time frame of the competition with the exception of the feet, which may be shaved prior to the contest. The following are permissible: scissored feet such as in the German trim, moustache and/or beard, show tie ups (including banding) and hair extensions. Scissored faces such as Bichon style are not permitted.

 

Times

11” and under: 1.5 hours  

11.1”-17”: 1.75 hours

17.1”-23”: 2.0 hours

23.1” and over: 2.25 hours.

SALON FREESTYLE
Not Sanctioned

Open to all sizes and breeds, including mixed breeds and purebred dogs NOT styled to breed standard.

WIRE
Groom Team Sanctioned

Includes all pure breeds with wire coat types that are typically hand stripped for the show ring. Please visit the Groom Team Canada  website for the full list of breeds by class and their associated time frames.

Time #1 is for clippered styling and Time #2 is for hand stripping.

Rolled or rotated coats are permissible, however the work must be sufficient to allow the groomer to make a distinct change in the appearance of the dog.   All grooming and styling in the hand strip class must adhere to the breed profile recommendations as accepted in pure breed dog shows.

Pet trims will not be considered in the judges evaluations for this class, and should be entered in the Salon Freestyle class.

Lorna Phillips

Lorna Phillips is the proud owner of "It’s a Dogs Life Pet Spa", a high end salon in Saskatoon, for the past 18 years. She prides herself in offering exceptional work and compassion to her many clients.

As a board member on Groom Team Canada, Lorna is at the forefront to share her ideas for the future of our industry, something she is extremely passionate about. She takes great pride in being a leader in the grooming industry, and loves meeting and helping groomers worldwide.
Lorna began competing across the globe in 2007. She was captain for Groom Team and represented Canada in Belgium in 2017 for the World Competition with a Poodle. She loves to share her skills and help other people achieve their goals through speaking and hosting seminars.
Lorna lives on an acreage with her husband Mike , 7 horses, 1 donkey, 3 goats, 6 cats and 6 dogs! She loves to spend her spare time playing with her grandkids and riding horses

Michell Evans

Michell The Grooming Tutor has been educating groomers since 2000. She is a Multi Best in Show and Best All Around Stylist winner. Michell is a respected grooming competition judge and demonstrator at trade shows all over the world.

Michell is Certified Master Groomer through National Dog Groomers Association of America (NDGAA), the International Professional Groomers Incorporated (IPG) International Society of Canine Cosmetologists (ISCC) and the National Cat Groomers Institute (CFMG). She is also a certifier for NDGAA.Michell has professionally groomed and handled many different breeds of dogs for American, Australia and Canadian Kennel Club dog shows.

As a GroomTeam USA member 2009-2013 she was the hand stripping member of the Silver Medal winning team for 2011 and the Gold Medal winning team for 2013. The World Team Championships were held in Kortrijk, Belgium in September of 2011 and in Barcelona Spain in October of 2013. Michell retired from grooming competitions after the gold medal.

Pina-Irina Pnkusevich

Irina Pinkusevich, beeter known as Pina, immigrated from the Ukraine in 1989. She realized her passion as a Pet Stylist while working part-time as a bather. In the earlier part of her career Irina worked as a Pet Stylist at some of the most high-end grooming salons in New York. Looking to improve her skills & expand her horizons, Irina entered the world of Competitive Grooming in 2006. In her competitive career Irina has won multiple BIS & Best All Around Groomer awards. She is a two time recipient of the Lynne Carver Award for most Best All Around Groomer wins in 2008 & 2010. Irina was also honored to win the Liz Paul Memorial Award for the most Best in Show wins in 2010. She is the winner of the Winner’s Circle Jackpot 2011 where she won $32,500 for grooming Lucas, her champion American Cocker Spaniel.
Irina was a member of Groom Team USA from 2008 through 2013. She competed in the World Championships for the United States

GROOM TEAM SANCTIONED CLASSES

Show structure, divisions and awards

 

Structure:

Multi-Division Competition – Open, Intermediate and Entry Divisions compete separately for the titles of first, second and third in their respective division classes.

Competition level division:

OPEN (A): Open to all competitors. Recommended for groomers with advanced styling skills, previous successful competition experience and professional conformation show exhibitors and/or certifiers with expert styling skills.

INTERMEDIATE (B):  Restricted to competitors who have not won 2 Best in Show or 2 Best All-Around groomer title OR three first placements from the Intermediate division at a Groom Team sanctioned show.  Recommended for groomers with Intermediate styling skills or conformation show ring exhibitors (Have groomed and handled a breed to champion) and/or certifiers with Intermediate styling skills.

***Change in rules effective 2019- you may also enter this division if you have never placed in an Open (A) division class. Example, never placed with Poodle class, but have in Sporting class

NOVICE (C): Restricted to beginner competitors who have not won 2 Best in Show or 2 Best All-Around groomer title from any division OR three first placements from the entry division at a Groom Team sanctioned show.  Recommended for groomers who have never competed and/or possess novice -grooming skills.  Handlers, conformation show exhibitors, certifiers and grooming instructors are not permitted to compete in the Novice Division.   This does not apply to new handlers who have not handled a breed to championship.

NOVICE- 1ST TIMER: Restricted to competitors in Novice divisions that have not competed prior to November 11, 2019. This does not include competitions such as Rescue Rodeo, Mystery Groom etc. 1st Timers will compete with all other Novice competitors in all available classes. You are not required to take any placements in the classes to qualify for Best 1st Timer, to take place Monday November 12, 2018. 

Groom Team Canada Points

Class placement points (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) will only be awarded to Open Competitors. Groom Team Points are only awarded to Open Division for the following classes, Poodle, Terrier(hand stripped), Sporting and Purebred. Placements from each class will be placed in their own category (i.e.: Poodle points into the Poodle category). Shows that are not able to host at least one full class of Open division competitors (2 or more) will not be eligible for Groom Team Canada Points.  

Minimum Entry Per Division

There must be a minimum of 3 entries per division to award 3 placements and prizes. In the event there are not more than 3 entries in a division, the following placements will be given:
3 entries; 1st place ribbon and prize, 2nd place ribbon and prize, 3rd place ribbon

2 entries: 1st place ribbon and [prize, 2nd place ribbon

1 entry: 1st place ribbon. You will have the option to withdraw your entry and offered a full refund, 7 days prior to the event. 

Clipper Class

Open to all sizes and breeds, including mixed breeds and purebred dogs in clippered pet trims. This fun competition class simulates what most of us do in the salon everyday. You will showcase your clipper skills to produce a pet trim that would be suitable for a clients dog

Times: 

17" and under: 50 minutes total
17.1" and over: 70 minutes total
Minimum 50% of allotted time must be used towards clipper work.

Creative Runway

This fun competition is to emphasise the stylists ability and skill of creating a beautiful pattering involving patterns, sculpting, accessories and minimal colour. The design should be suitable for a clients pet and able to accomplish compelet in a day.

Rules: 

Open to all levels of grooming experience

  • Any purebred or mixed breed cat or dog is permitted to use

  • This is a pregroomed competition.  Meaning the final trim and design will be done prior to competition check in

  • Competitors attire should compliment the design

Procedures:

  • All styling, use of products and accessories should be completed prior to checking

  • The MC will interview stylist about the design and inspiration. If the presenter in uncomfortable with being interviews, they can provide a few written details to be announces, prior  to entering the runway.

  • Music requests must be given prior to check in.

This entertaining grooming contest has been a favourite of groomers at multiple shows worldwide. This is a great way to get into the contest ring and let loose without any stress. The rules are simple:

  1. Two groomers, one dog, grooming to perfection and entertain your judges as much as possible.

  2. Any purebred or mixed breed is allowed in this class, and groomers will work simultaneously on the dog.

  3. Themes are encouraged, gifting and bribery towards the judges is not unlikely, and joyous merriment must be had by all involved!!

Time frames: Dogs 16” and under 1 hour Dogs 17” and over 1 hour 20 minutes There will be three placements in this class,

Mini Me 
All competitors for this class must be under the age of 15 years old. Model dog heads will be used for this class and should be completely brushed out before the competition starts.
Entry fees include model dogs head and wig. All kids will receive a participation ribbon and are able to keep the model dog.

Prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

**Important: this competition takes place under the supervision of adult, the organizers cannot accept responsibility in the event of accidents.

 

Tag Team 

This fun and entertain grooming competition the perfect way to forget about the rules and have some fun in the ring

  • Open to ant purebred or mix breed dog.

  • Teams of 2, 3 or 4 will simultaneously groom one dog while entertaining the judges and audience.

  • Themes are encouraged

  • Timeframe: 2 groomers 80 minutes, 3 groomers 65 minutes, 4 groomers 50 minutes, for all size

AWARDS
All divisions are judged simultaneously. The placements (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) are awarded in each division. Only Open Division receives points.

Best In Novice

Best in Novice will be chosen from all First Place winners in Novice division classes. Best in Novice will not qualify for Groom Team Points.

Best 1st Timer

Best 1st Timer  will be chosen from all competitors in Novice division that have not competed prior to November 12, 2018.  Best 1st Timers is open to all classes, excluding the Mini Me class, and will be awarded Monday, November 12, 2018. Best 1st Timer will not qualify for Groom Team Points.
